Life constantly presents us with decisions. At certain stages of life, our choices may seem more significant than at other times. But no matter, from our youngest age to our oldest age, there will be decisions. In our decision process, we should consider Biblical principles that will help us make wise decisions.
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God… James 1:5
PRAY
First and foremost, prayer should be the first thing we do when faced with a decision. Pray honestly. Try to be neutral in your prayer. Prayer is the key to understanding what God wants for your life. We should not expect the outcome of our prayers to be a precise roadmap. God may provide us with the next step in the decision. There is power in prayer!
WHAT IS MY MOTIVE?
Every choice begins with a motive.
The dad who chooses to work 60 hours a week to provide for his family has a different motive than the dad who decides to work 60 hours a week because he wants to impress his friends with his stuff. Both dads are making the same choice, but one dad has the wrong motive; therefore, his intention is wrong.
When faced with a tough decision, we should ask ourselves why we consider one choice over the other. Examining our motive means we must be honest with ourselves. By being honest, we might be able to see what the right choice is quick.
Examples of unhealthy motives that can lead to the wrong choice:
- Seeking the approval of others.
- Trying to impress others.
- Desiring to get even with someone.
DO YOUR PART
When selling a home, you do everything possible to ensure it is in the proper condition. You do everything you can to make it look nice, have any repairs done, hire the right agent, and price it correctly. Once the sign is in the yard, you have done your part. Now, it would be time to commit if it sold to the Lord.
In the book of James, “faith without works is dead” is mentioned several times. In every choice, there is a part that we must do.
If you are struggling with making a decision, do not base it upon the opinion of your friends. Do your research. Seek Godly counsel from people that do not have ulterior motives and, most importantly, pray.
COMMIT YOUR DECISION TO THE LORD
Once you have made your choice, commit the outcome to God.
If you have…
- prayed,
- examined your motive,
- done your part,
then commit the choice you made to the Lord.
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. Psalm 37:5
May God keep you and your family healthy.
